I was born today on the cheek of a northerly wind. My mother was a great Nimbus, born of the oceans, lakes, and streams. My father was the Open Sky and I recoiled beneath his solemn embrace.
I am a fragile creature; my symmetry reaches out to all corners of the Universe. The gentle breezes carried me aloft. The harsh winds forced me to earth. Here, I am gathered with a great multitude of my brothers and sisters. Alone, I am nothing, unique in myself, without power. together we cover the Earth and silence it.
We bring peace and joy to many creatures of this world, to others, we bring death in the bitter night. We scream at the glare of the noonday sun and shrink from its fire. We seek the cold beauty of the Moon and reflect its intensity in our lives.
We are of this world. In time, we will be trampled underfoot and will melt into the Earth and with the Spring we will erect a new Kingdom. My father the sky will one day call me heavenward and I will begin a new life.
I am the ever-changing pattern of snow.
